Sometimes the best proof that something's working comes straight from the people using it. That's exactly what happened last month, when Fall River Electric Cooperative received a heartfelt letter from a family whose road trip took them straight through our corner of the region — thanks in part to the fast chargers right here in Island Park.
The Thapa family from Boulder, Colorado, set out on an ambitious trip this summer: up through Jackson, into Yellowstone, and on into Montana — all in a Rivian R1S, a non-Tesla electric vehicle. As anyone who's driven an EV through this part of the country knows, that's no small undertaking. The charging infrastructure on the east side of the Tetons, particularly around Jackson, is notoriously thin for non-Tesla drivers, and that gap creates real range anxiety for traveling families.
That's where Fall River Electric's fast chargers came in. Discovering reliable, functional charging available in Driggs and Island Park changed the family's entire itinerary — giving them the confidence to route their trip through our side of the mountains and into Yellowstone rather than staying east of the Tetons.
And that rerouted trip meant rerouted dollars. While charging up, the family spent their time — and their money — at local businesses, restaurants, and grocery stores along the way, in towns they might have otherwise bypassed entirely.
It's a great reminder of something we believe deeply here at the Chamber: infrastructure like EV charging isn't just a convenience for drivers passing through — it's an economic development tool. Every traveler who routes their vacation through Island Park because the charging is reliable is a traveler spending their tourism dollars right here in our community.
Our thanks go out to Fall River Electric Cooperative for their continued investment in this infrastructure across the region, and to the Thapa family for taking the time to share their experience. Stories like this one are exactly why we'll keep advocating for the kind of infrastructure that keeps travelers coming back to Island Park.
